Jacob W. Carroll, born 1844 in Tennessee, came to St. Clair county when about 10 years old. In 1862, enlisted in Company I, 7th Missouri Infantry, Confederate service, served until close of war.

1883 History of St. Clair County MO, National Historical Co., pg. 1212:
JACOB W. CARROLL, the owner of a farm consisting of 200 acres, located in section 19, is a native of Tennessee, and was born
in Roane County, March 6, 1844. When he was about ten years of age he came to St. Clair County, Missouri, where he has since resided. In 1862 he enlisted in Company I, Seventh Missouri Infantry, of the Confederate service, and remained in active service until the close of the war. January 16, 1873, Mr. Carroll married Miss Lizzie Ellis, a Kentuckian by birth. They have one child, Myrtie J.

Confederate Missouri Troops, 16th Regiment, Missouri Infantry
16th Infantry Regiment was formed by consolidating Caldwell's 7th and Jackson's 7th Missouri Infantry Regiment early in 1864. The unit was assigned to Parson's and S.P. Burns' Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and was active in Louisiana and Arkansas. It sustained 14 casualties at Pleasant Hill and 25 at Jenkins' Ferry. In May, 1865, the regiment disbanded. Its field officers were Colonel Levin M. Lewis, Lieutenant Colonel Pleasant W.H. Cumming, and Major Jesse P. Herrell.
