PAPE, Gideon
GIDEON PAPE, dealer in general merchandise at Tiffin, is a native of Germany, and was born July 21, 1846. He was reared and educated in
his native country, and was there engaged in agricultural pursuits till 1865, when he emigrated to America, landing at New York. After this he traveled until 1871, when, coming to St. Clair County, Missouri, he
located on the Osage, where he followed the milling business until 1876. Then he began in his present business, in which he has been very
successful, and he is now one of the leading business men of the county. He is a member of the I.O.O.F. fraternity. Mr. Pape was married October 2, 1873, to Miss Elizabeth M. Bogle, of Niagara County, New York. They have three children: Charlotta A., Stella A. and
Edith E.
PAPE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, From St. Clair County Library Files (History of Tiffin Baptist) - Clear Creek was a large stream and there was a mill known as Papes Mill owned by Gideon Pape. He owned the land and put up the first store in 1876. In July 1876 the first post office in Speedwell Township was established and Gideon Pape was Postmaster. Old Tiffin later became known as Pape.
TIFFIN BAPTIST CHURCH - Early History from St. Clair County Library Records (Condensed): A meeting was held on December 7, 1883 at the post office (which was in the general store owned by Gideon Pape) the purpose of which was to begin work on the measures necessary for said project. It was proposed to be a non-secretarian meeting house at the following location: The SW corner of Sec 18, Township 47, Range 27. This is the location of Old Tiffin known in later years as Pape.
