Death of Gen. James S. Rains.
A special telegram from Dallas, Texas, announces the death of Gen. James S. Rains, on Wednesday last, at his plantation in Kaufman county, Texas. This news will be read with genuine sorrow by many Missourians. General Rains, before the war, resided in the southwestern part of this State. He was a man of splendid physique, was rich (particularly in land and slave property) and a powerful speaker on the hustings. He took an active part in the politics, and represented his district in the State Senate whenever he wanted to, whether in political accord with a majority of the voters of the district or not. At the breaking out of the war he was commander of a division of the Missouri State Guard, and in the battles of Carthage and Oak Hills (Wilson Creek) acted in that capacity. He moved his negroes to Texas bout the time of the last named battle, and thereafter made that State his home. Two or three years ago he ceased to act with the Democratic party, and at the last State election he was the Greenback candidate for Lieutenant Governor. He had social qualities that made for him a wide circle of admiring friends. – Sedalia Democrat, May 21st.
