The Rape Case.

George Herrington the man who was committed to Jail ten days ago charged with raping Miss Mary E. Allison near Johnson City on the 20th ult., was liberated last Saturday on a writ of habeas corpus, but was immediately arrested and returned to jail, his preliminary examination being fixed for Monday. The trial proceeded at that time before Squire McIlhenny, Messrs. Jennings and Nesbit conducting the prosecution, and Messrs. Lucas and Ryors the defense. The case occupied the entire day, the Justice reserving his decision until Tuesday morning at which time the prisoner was discharged. From the evidence it was manifest that the charge of rape was not sustained but there is no doubt that Herrington deserved punishment for his treatment of Miss Allison. We must again reiterate our words of warning to young ladies against having anything whatever to do with men of whom they know nothing.
