Barn – Lime Kiln Ranch
ST. CLAIR COUNTY LANDMARK GETS A NEW LIFE, by Gar Garman
The cupola is visible above the tops of the oak trees as you drive east on B
highway toward Galnipper Cove of Truman Lake near Osceola. It, and the massive
barn, on whose roof it sits, has been a landmark in St. Clair County for nearly
100 years.
The barn was part of the old Lime Kiln Ranch. There is a lot of history involved
from its original 678 acres as part of the Leichester M. Beers Ranch, the barn
dances, the abundant source of phosphate rich limestone, a marketplace for mules
during World War I.
But, mostly a landmark on a place that survived loss of most of its acreage to
Truman Lake, fire and time.
