JOHN H. LUCAS (1852 – 1926)

Note: See Jesse W. Terwilliger for further information.

St. Clair County Library Files, Durl Barnett Collection - Undated Obituary:

JOHN H. LUCAS
The death of Honorable John H. Lucas, of Osceola, Missouri. On March 19, 1926, removed from the bar of St. Clair County, one of it’s distinguished and able members; a man who had for many years been one of the leading members of the bar of the state and country and who had no superior, anywhere, as a lawyer; a man who was known far and wide for his great legal learning as well as for his uniform courtesy and good humor in the trial of all cases.

Born at Danville, Kentucky, on February 7, 1852, he came to Osceola in 1871, where he maintained his residence until the time of his death.

He early formed a partnership with William T. Johnson for the practice of law at Osceola and this partnership continued to the date of his
death, although about forty years ago, the firm moved its office to Kansas city and Mr. Lucas spent most of his time in that city.

He, at all times, was prominent in the democratic Party, was high in the Masonic Lodge and was active in the councils of the Methodist
Church. For many years he taught the Men’s Bible class at the Grace M.E. Church and was always found discharging his Christian duties.

St. Clair County Republican, Thursday, 5 September 1888:

J.H. Lucas visited Kansas City last week on legal business.

Back To Jail. The County Court Returns to Jefferson City.
The county court, accompanied by their attorney, Mr. John H. Lucas, left for Jefferson City last Monday. More than ordinary interest attaches to their departure this time, inasmuch as it will be the first duty of the new judge, Hon. John F. Philips, to lay out a policy for the United States court to pursue in the matter. Opinion is divided as to what his mode of procedure will be, some holding that he will merely pursue the policy laid down by Judge Krekel and order the judges back to jail, and others believe that he will decide that he has no constitutional right to imprison a lower court for obeying the orders of the highest tribunal in a state. Should this latter course be the one pursued, it will work greatly to the benefit of the people in their efforts to secure a low rate of compromise.
Before leaving the court made an order appointing Judge Tandy, Dr. J.C. Whaley and Asa Landon as a committee to wait upon the bondholders and see what can be done toward settling this mooted question in a manner at once satisfactory to the people and the holders of the bonds; and a further order was made notifying the bondholders that said committee would meet them in the law office of Hon. John B. Henderson, in St. Louis, on Saturday, September 15. The committee is a good one, and it is to be hoped that something tangible may result from the meeting.
A Republican reporter interviewed the judges before their departure, and they expressed the opinion very freely that something would result from the meeting. Asked as to the probable sum on which the bondholders would be willing to compromise, Judge Hoyt thought they would take 50 cents on the bonds, but would make no prediction as to the amount they would demand on judgments. He further stated that the bondholders were rapidly placing all the bonds in judgment.
As the court made an order to meet again on Monday, September 17, it is evident that they either hope for freedom from Judge Philips or a satisfactory offer of compromise from the bondholders.

St. Clair County Democrat, 20 February 1889:

New Enterprises for Osceola.
The Blair ravel works, for which boats and barges are now in the course of construction.
Lime and brick works, to be operated by a Kansas City company. The arrangements for this enterprise have been completed and work on the kilns and machinery will soon begin.
A gas well, which will be sunk to a depth of 1200 feet by a company, of which J.H. Lucas, of Osceola, W.T. Johnson and W.H. Lucas, of Kansas City, are members. As soon as the weather will permit work will be commenced, and the well sunk as rapidly as possible.
The Frowein Red Sand Stone Company, composed of A. Frowein and W.C. Wallace, of Clinton, has purchased 60 acres of red sand stone land near Slat Creek Springs, and machinery is now ordered to work this material into marketable shape.
The St. Clair County Stone Company, to which belong J.H. Lucas, W.H. Lucas and W.T. Johnson, will operate a large red sand stone quarry north of Osceola. The switch has been contracted for, and a large amount of machinery will be put in.
The Thornton Paving Company will operate a large number of hands all summer getting out paving stone for the streets of Clinton. Work has been begun by this company, and when the switch is laid will be pushed vigorously.
These works are all assured and will employ, collectively, large numbers of men. The benefits to Osceola cannot be fully realized at a glance, but that they will be far reaching there can be no doubt.
