NANCE CEMETERY
Location - Doyal Township. West from Mo Hwy 13 on V Hwy 2 miles to WW Hwy to end of WW then east on SE 470 to SE 601, through fields and across a creek. Cemetery on east side of road.

History - Reuben Sanders Nance was born 28 May 1808 in Virginia. His parents were Reuben and Nancy (Brown) Nance of Henry County, Virginia. Reuben married Sarah Clardy in Tennessee around 1830 and had five children. In the year of 1835, Reuben Sanders Nance settled on section 34 in Doyal Township. He operated two stores and was County Surveyor for 20 years. His family held many offices in St. Clair County.
The Nance Cemetery is still owned by descendants of Mr. Nance. The farm he and his descendants had acquired and added to remained in the family for 129 years until it was sold in 1994.
His wife and three generations can be found in the cemetery, but Reuben Sanders Nance lies elsewhere in an unmarked grave.
During the Civil War, for reasons unknown by his descendants living today, Reuben left his family and departed with his slaves to go south and was never heard from again.
