WRIGHT BAILEY (1854 – 1941)

Picture of Wright Bailey –Appleton City Centennial 1870-1970
From Appleton City Centennial Book 1870-1970:
Wright Bailey was born in Howard County, Missouri on March 3, 1854. In 1865 the
family moved to Bates County. As a young man he was a farmer and stock grower.
After reaching his legal majority he moved to Appleton City and in 1871 was
concerned with the loading of the first car of livestock shipped from the new
town.
His business was of major economic importance to Appleton City. From his youth
until a week before he died at the age of 86, he had active association with the
livestock industry and shipped stock weekly to the markets of St. Louis, Kansas
City and sometimes Chicago.
During the later years, his son W. E. (Dick) Bailey joined his father in buying
and shipping livestock. They conducted an enormous volume of business.

A Tornado Started It All, by Wilbur Zink:
WRIGHT BAILEY STOCKYARDS
The first train shipment of cattle from the new city of Appleton City was the
year 1870 which was the year it was founded. A Young man of 16 who participated
in this first shipment was Wright Bailey. He is still remembered as the
Stockyard Cattle Man.
He came to St. Clair County as a lad of 10 years. His parents were Moses and
Margaret Bailey. Young Wright grew up and rode a horse around the country buying
cattle and driving them to his stockyard in Appleton City. He built a large
house at Third & Poplar and built his stockyard across the street. It was known
as The Bailey Cattle Company. He put in a scale as everything was purchased by
the pound. He also had another stockyard in the vacated lumberyard directly
behind Citizens Bank and yet another on the north side of Appleton City.
His son, Dick, joined the business and continued to operate it after Wright died
in 1941. Dick Bailey died in 1945 and the yards were sold.
